6lack and Beyond

Originally published November 2017

I’m in Atlanta Georgia.

6lack AND Sabrina Claudio will be performing tonight and Sunday.

I really love these two artist.

Electric Soul.

Alternative R&B.

Real. Raw.

The first time I heard the Free 6lack Project, I was musically paralyzed. I couldn’t listen to anything else. 6lack’s voice was so hypnotic. I couldn’t understand how he was able to sound so full of passion, yet so emotionless at the same time.

And Sabrina. Besides being gorgeous. Her singing voice is both calming and mesmerizing.

I had a very difficult decision to make. My bills are due. But I also was to go to this show. $40 isn’t a lot right?

It is when your rent, student loan payment, car note, car insurance and light bill are due.

Defeat.

“Now I know going out of this, I know leaving this, a lot of that will follow me. But it doesn't end with this, you know, like I take it and I... I live with it every day. I see the people around me and... I feel so much. I wanna put it in words and try to figure out where to go with it, but I feel so much. I know they don't even feel as much as I feel. But that's alright, that's alright.”

Alone/EA6, 6lack

I would love to here him perform EA6.

But with a heavy sigh, I have to be a responsible adult. I probably won’t get a chance to see 6lack for a good while since he only has a few more shows in the US before his overseas leg, and Lord knows I can’t get over there anytime soon.

Sometimes when I listen to artist, especially when I know they write their own music, I wonder what drove that ability to create a masterpiece. I want to talk to them about what their creative process looks like beyond just being in the studio.

Who knows, maybe one day I can have tea with 6lack and have him do a segment for Mental Matters Mondays.

Until then….
